Peru’s Amazon

When folks speak of Peru, their first thought is generally Machu Picchu.  I have never been there but I have been assured that it is worth it.  Another Peruvian location you may want to visit is the Peruvian Amazon.  Combine it with a Machu Picchu visit or take it as a solo trip.  Either way will work!

Are you an adventure-lover?  If so, this is one location you need to explore!  This river is one of the most biodiverse locations in existence.  It is estimated that at least 10% of all animals in the world can be found here.  There is an astonishing amount of wildlife  including river dolphins, toucans, sloths, howler monkeys and many more!  Heck, go fishing for piranhas!

The Amazon River starts high in the  mountains of Peru and flows through eight countries before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil.  To many people, Brazil immediately pops into mind when the river is mentioned.  Peru is different – a very special part of this waterway. There are two distinctive regions here – both are easily reachable.  If you can visit both, do so!   Each has a diverse collection of animals.  Southeastern Peru is an easy trip from Cusco.  You can hike and explore and spend your nights in jungle lodges!  If rustic lodges are not your thing, go to the northern part of the country.  Here you will be able to take multi-day cruises of the waterways on plush riverboats.

The Peruvian Amazon has become a go-to place for two different demographics.  Well traveled baby boomers  mark another country off their bucket list while enjoying a unique experience.  Younger travelers love exploration, camping and backpacking.   Try something distinctive and singular in this lush and verdant jungle!

  2. I’m not much of a hiker but would love to see Macha Picchu. I wonder if that is possible. The Amazon River sounds good too if it is not too hot.
