Train travel continues to grow in popularity and why not? You can find rail excursions in nearly every price range from basic to ultra-luxurious and everywhere in between. Frankly, even the more basic excursions are quite nice. Rail outings are increasing on all continents but especially in Europe and the US. I have written about Amtrak and Rocky Mountaineer excursions in the United States and Canada. Today I am going to focus on European train travel.
Europe is the top vacation destination for Americans and the home of some of the most scenic rail trips in existence. One such rail expedition is the The Bergen Railway in Norway. This 6.5 hour junket is a delightful look at its natural beauty and unique characteristics. Starting in the large city of Oslo it travels to the smaller, yet alluring town of Bergen. On the ride in-between you will go by rivers, barren landscapes and fjords. It crosses the Hardangervidda National Park and Hollingdal, where you can check out a bear park. This train runs all year and you will need to reserve a place in advance.
The Bernina Express in Switzerland is probably one of the best known trains in Europe. The ride begins in Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland and continues through stunning scenery. You will pass through the Engadin Alps and view its towering glaciers. The 4 hour trek ends in Tirano, Italy. The warm temperature and palm trees will signal your exit from Switzerland!. The ride is mostly on the Rhaetian Railway and goes through numerous bridges, tunnels and aqueducts. While the train runs year round, if you want a seat in the panorama car purchase your ticket in advance. You can, however, purchase a ticket in the standard car the same day.
Other lovely European trains include France’s La Petit Train Jaune, the Odontotos Rack Rack Railway in Greece and the El Transcantabrio Gran Lujo in Spain. I will feature them in a future post.
I was thinking about this and came across your blog. It is impressive, and provided ideas. Thank you for writing.
Thanks, Belinda!
I heard that the Bergen Railway is astounding and we hope to ride it when we are in Norway.
It certainly sounds wonderful. Thanks for your comment
