We hear a lot these days about sustainable travel but what does it really mean? It encompasses respect for native cultures, as well as doing what we can do to ensure the well-being of our planet. Ecotourism is a part of this -making deliberate decisions to visit and support natural areas of the planet. It has a focus on the long-term. Are you interested in participating? If so, here are two places you may want to look into:
NORWAY’S BRIM EXPLORER – This company offers fjord cruises on ships which emphasize a close connection with nature that does not leave a trace. The goal is to showcase natural areas and wildlife in an undisturbed manner. It doesn’t hurt that this company also provides contemporary Norwegian comfort for its travelers!
If you are looking for a warmer location consider Mexico. This country has so many unique landscapes, colorful creatures while still protecting its biodiversity. Here is one such location you will enjoy!
HOBOX ISLAND – Located off the Yucatan Peninsula, this island does not allow cars and you will need to travel by ferry to get there. You can walk or ride bicycles and the natural beauty will astound you. Its commitment to sustainability does not end with banning cars, however. Many of its hotels are constructed with recycled materials, designed specifically to assist preservation of the environment. The laid-back atmosphere of the beaches is relaxing and offers a wide assortment of wildlife. Visit the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and see even more animals, including flamingos and jaguars. You can go boating or kayaking and the island is known for beautiful sunsets!
