Mackinac Island, Michigan

We have never been to Mackinac Island but are tentatively planning a trip for next summer.  Lately I have been talking to friends and doing a bit of reading. To me it sounds like a wonderful place to visit.  Let me  share some of the information with you!

Mackinac Island is located  between the two peninsulas of Michigan and is different from the rest of the state in several ways.  First of all, cars are not allowed on the island. Consequently there is little smog or traffic.  You will want to park your car on designated lots prior to catching the ferry.  Some ferries, such as Sheplers have their own lots you may park in. Once you get to the island you will have a choice of transportation – you can walk, bike or ride in a horse-drawn carriage.  The island is small and you can leisurely walk around it.  Riding a bicycle is always a great choice, as it allows you the opportunity to stop and go as you please.  There are plenty of landmarks, historic sites and whatever catches your fancy!

Get a sample of the island’s fudge for a taste of the old-time island.  It is unlike other sweets you have tasted and you can  experience a treat made from centuries old recipes.  It is made in small batches and you can find it in numerous fudge shops.  There is even a fudge festival held every autumn.

There are numerous hotels and BnBs located to choose from.  If you are looking for warm weather, visit in the summer.  It is rumored to be quite enchanting in autumn as well!
