Dark Skies in the UK

I have to confess that I only recently heard the term  “Dark Sky”  . It is exactly what it sounds like – a place where the night sky is dark and free of light pollution.  Go there to see earth’s wonders – the stars dancing across the sky.   You may also see the Northern Lights.  Where to go?  While the immediate thought may be Alaska, Iceland or one of the Nordic countries, there are other locations. Let’s take a look.

Tourism in the UK has increased quite a bit in the last few years.  While there are numerous reasons, one is the presence of the Dark Sky as well as the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.

CUMBRIA

Located in northwest England, it borders Scotland and is best  known for the Lake District.  When you are visiting the lakes, make sure you take some time to view the Dark Skies.  In fact, this district holds a Dark Sky Festival” every autumn.  Although there is no guarantee, the Northern Lights can also be seen at times. It is one of the most likely places in Great Britain to see them.  When it is though, it is spectacular.

WALES

Wales has three international Dark Sky Reserves. These include: Brecon Beacons National Park, Eryri National Park and Elan Valley Estate.  These are all popular spots for star gazing.  Though there is no guaranteed spot to see the Northern Lights, your chances do increase in the northern part of this area.  Eryri is one of the best places to catch a glimpse.

Scotland

Scotland is the most likely place in the UK to stargaze and find the Northern Lights.  Even in this northern area it is still best to head to the north!  Get as far away from cities as possible in an elevated space.  Scotland has numerous parks and communities for viewing.  Two of the best are Galloway Forest Park and the Isle of Rum

If you find yourself in the UK, check these out for an opportunity to see natural celestial phenomena.  Happy hunting!
