EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Traditional christmas market in the historic center of Frankfurt, Germany

European Christmas markets are incredibly popular but that has not always been the case!  These markets have been a part of European culture since Medieval times.  Originally they were simple affairs- small wooden stalls.  That is no longer the case.  Today they number in the thousands and are located all across Europe; many of them open from late November to January.  If you are looking for a holiday vacation, this may be exactly what you are looking for!.  Plan a land tour or take one of the Christmas cruises that stop at multiple locations.  Here are three of the thousands of available markets.

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – Located in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s offering has over 500,000 lights giving the market a fairy tale look.  In fact, Tivoli Gardens was the inspiration for Disney Land.  Traditional bands playing Christmas music are everywhere, there are roller coasters and indoor stage shows.  Danish sweets are delicious – make sure you try a few!

NUREMBERG, GERMANY – With its 180 wooden booths and red and white cloth roof, this is a top choice for many people. Take a self-guided tour and see products made by local artisans.  Check out their “prune people” made locally from dried prunes. It is rumored that they bestow good luck – give a try and see if it works for you!   Have some spiced wine and consider a ride through the city in a stage coach; enjoy the shine and shimmer of a December night in Nuremberg!

TRENTO, ITALY – Citta del Natale (Christmas Town) with its thousands of lights and glittering trees is located near the bottom of the Brenta Dolomites!  The Alps in the background serve to ratchet up the beauty of this already gorgeous  town.  This charming city has lovely fountains embellished with wooden nativity scenes made by the local craftsmen. The numerous huts sell a wide variety of items including cheese, sweet panettones, glass ornaments, and much more!  Make sure to grab a delicious treat!
