The Three Coldest Countries!

While a lengthy stretch of hot summer days will leave me irritable, I always prefer the heat over severe cold.  Always.  I barely tolerate the winters in southeastern NC which are actually warm compared to the places I am going to discuss.  Do you like cold weather?  If so, stay tuned for a discussion on the coldest countries in the world!

The absolute coldest place on earth is Antarctica with its record low of -128.6 F.  However it is a continent  rather than a country and today I am discussing countries.  Here are the top three:

RUSSIA –  As a huge country with 2/3rds of its territory within the arctic and polar belts, winters can be brutal.  Permafrost covers an area the size of the US.  I was actually there once in February and yep, I froze!  I was totally unprepared for the biting cold.  Should I ever return it will be in the summer!

CANADA – The second coldest country has 40% of its territory inside the Arctic Circle and there is permafrost under half of its land. I have also been to Canada but was wise enough to stick to the summer!  Areas on the coasts, as well as the land bordering the US tend to be warmer. Not surprisingly, the majority of Canadian citizens live in those areas.

GREENLAND – While summers here can occasionally reach near 80F, they are usually much cooler.  The winters are snowy, windy and nearly always cloudy.  80% of the land is permanently covered by uninhabitable ice resulting in making it the least populated country in the world.  Tourism is picking up, however, as there are a number of activities in the summer for a good vacation.

Intrigued?  Take a look at these countries, as well the rest of the top ten.  Some may rearrange the order, but all three are ALWAYS in the top ten!
