The Faroe Islands

faroeIslands4

Located between the UK, Iceland, and Norway, the Faroe Islands are a self-governing region of Denmark.  There are actually more sheep than there are humans in this small country whose population numbers around 54,000.  At one time the islands were isolated with few visitors but that has changed over the last decade.  Tourists actually outnumber residents at times!

These green islands are known for their dramatic scenery, steep cliffs and waterfalls that empty directly into the sea. They are also recognized for their bird cliffs–this could be a fascinating destination for bird lovers!  Cool summers are the norm here, and yes the winters can be cold.  What does a tourist do here?  Admire the scenery, of course, while recognizing your time will be dictated by the weather which is frequently both rainy and windy.

One interesting tradition is known as Heimabidni, which tourists often prefer to restaurants. Many locals offer meals, which you will enjoy in their homes.  You’ll get delicious food in addition to an opportunity to learn about the culture and the people themselves.

English is widely spoken in the Faroe Islands, although the native language is Faroese.  Have you been to this windswept collection of islands?  If so, I would love to hear more about it!
