Where To  Go on a Caribbean Cruise?

Beach and rustic thatched roof palapa, Montego Bay - Jamaica - Caribbean sea

This is my second installment on Caribbean cruising.  Generally, cruises in the Caribbean are divided into  Eastern or Western cruises.  If you are new to cruising (or even if you are not) you may wonder which is best.  Let’s take a look at the similarities and differences between the two.

Eastern – Often these cruises include visits to Puerto Rica, the US Virgin Islands, the French West Indies, and the Bahamas.  Usually you will embark from Florida – Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Orlando.  The eastern islands often have better beaches with calm, clear water and a multitude of white sand beaches.  They are often more urban and modern with more hotels and all-inclusive resorts.  If you have young children, there tends to be more for them to do.  Many of the eastern cruises  will take you closer to the open waters of the Atlantic.  The ports are often closer together and you will spend more time onshore and less time on the ship.

Western – While many sail from Florida, they also depart from Galveston, New Orleans or Mobile.  If you are looking for a shorter cruise, you are more likely to find one here.   They are frequently, but not always, easier on the budget.  While they frequently visit the Bahamas, they also visit Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Mexico.  At times you will see a western cruise that also visits Central American countries such as Belize.  The islands are less developed than those found in the eastern region and have more of a focus on history and culture. Shore excursions may be more adventurous.  The destinations also tend to be more spread out, which means you will be on the ship more. Your personal interests will determine whether this is  good or bad!

Both locations have good shore excursions and offer an opportunity to lounge on the beach, shop, or explore.   The weather is similar, they are easy to reach via cruise and both emphasize the outdoors.  Both can be good for families.  Despite the differences in culture and customs, all islands have a similar vibe with a slower pace and friendly locals.  There are beautiful islands in both the east and the west- which you choose will be based on what you enjoy!

Stay tuned for the next edition which will focus on the different cruise lines who sail the Caribbean!
