Unique,Non-touristy and Caribbean

Waterfall 20 meters high, formed by waters of Socoa River and located in Monte Plata, an eastern province of the Dominican Republic.

Sun, sand, and surf, thy name is the Caribbean, home to some of the best beaches in the world!  While the Bahamas and Jamaica are hot spots, there are also some places that are off the beaten path.  In the mood for fewer tourists and locations less traveled?  Take a look at one of these:

Dominica – Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic (which I will also cover), Dominica is a mountainous island located in the Caribbean Sea in the Lesser Antilles between Martinique and Guadeloupe.  With its volcanoes, boiling lake, whales, loggerhead turtles, it is one of the most unique islands in the Caribbean.  UNESCO World Heritage Site Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a must-see.  This active volcano also contains Trafalgar Falls with its twin waterfalls.  When you finish admiring the falls, take a dip in swimming or take a hike!

The Dominican Republic – Though it is  home of Punta Cana, (one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean) with its all-inclusive resorts and general high energy, there is another side to this island.  Located 85 miles northeast of  the city, there is a totally different Dominican Republic far removed from the white sand beaches.  Los Haitises National Park with its tropical forests, towering rock formations, waterfall and petrographs. Take a full day guided tour from Punta Cana and enjoy the dolphins, manatees and birds of many varieties.  Don’t worry about getting back to Punta Cana that day– this national park is the site of numerous eco-lodges.

If you are looking for something different and distinctive in the Caribbean, feel free to get up with me!
