Get your motor running! The Florida Keys Scenic Byway is the perfect road trip! While it is a great excursion any time of year, it is especially enjoyable in the fall and winter, when pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds are the norm Expect scenic ocean views and a multitude of bridges, including The Seven Mile Bridge, aka the Overseas Highway, on this 113 mile trek that connects the Florida mainland to Key West.
Start in Key Largo, the dive capital of the Keys! This is a wonderful destination for folks who enjoy nature and the outdoors. Go parasailing, take a sunset cruise, or just relax in the sand and watch the sun go down. If you have a yen to swim with the dolphins, that is also available. Don’t worry if you can’t fit it in here, it is available in other places on this road trip! Our most enjoyable excursion was at John Pennekamp State Park. We took a charter out through its 70 nautical miles to view the coral reef. Florida is the only state in the continental US where coral reefs can be viewed. We snorkeled around the reef, enjoying the clear water and colorful fish. It was quite an experience!
After leaving Key Largo, continue on to Marathon. Visit the Turtle Hospital, a non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates the animals and releases them back into their natural habitat. This low-key location is also a great place to exhale and relax on the calm beaches tailor made for paddleboarding and kayaking.
Key West is as energizing as ever! Admire the architecture, check out the sunset celebrations at Mallory Square or just succumb to Duval’s Street lively bars! Check out Margaritaville and turn up Jimmy Buffett!
Another good post, Barbara!
Thanks!
