Cruises and Hurricanes

As a travel advisor, I enjoyed planning all types of travel but especially enjoyed booking cruises!  Part of this is due to personal fondness for this method of travel, I find them both relaxing and invigorating – a combination not always found together. I enjoy helping people find the perfect destination as well as discover the cruise line that will be most in tune with their personal style! One of the most perplexing situations that would arise is the issue around taking a Caribbean cruise during hurricane season.

While the Atlantic/Caribbean hurricane season is officially June1 through November 30, most hurricanes tend to be in August through October.  You should carefully consider cruising during this time- remembering to consider the advantages (lower prices and often smaller crowds) as well as the drawbacks.

Caribbean cruise lines have very effective methods to avoid hurricanes.  Avoidance is the key word here.  With long histories of cruising in this part of the world, they have top-of-the-line satellites, in addition to well-trained officers who continuously monitor the weather.  When a storm is spotted, they will immediately change course to avoid it.  The ships move faster than the storms and are quite adept at outrunning them.

Be flexible with port changes in the event of a course alteration.   While this is not a common occurrence, it does happen.  Listen to the crew – they don’t want to be caught in a hurricane anymore than you do!

Bottom line- if you want to take a Caribbean cruise during hurricane season, do so!  Take out travel insurance and if you want to avoid even a remote chance of a hurricane; take a cruise to the ABC Islands, which are totally outside of the Hurricane Zone.
