It’s All About the Layers!

So often we equate vacations with warm weather and easy packing.  Especially over the last few years, however, many travelers have started trekking to colder destinations – witness the popularity of Iceland, which may soon be followed by Greenland.

Cold weather can be tricky to successfully pack for but if you fail to do so, you can easily ruin the vacation.  I can remember my husband and I visiting Russia (a number of years ago) and how ill-prepared we were for the Moscow winter.  Living in the South had not prepared me for such deep and penetrating cold and I failed to do my homework on it.  I do not plan on letting that happen again!

To a big extent, layering is the name of the game.  You’ll need a base layer that is tight, breathable and quick drying followed by an insulating layer of jeans or sweatpants combined with a hoodie or sweatshirt.  Your outer layer should be a wind-resistant and waterproof winter or rain coat.

Here are some items you should take with you:

Moisture wicking wool socks, leggings and top

Zip up sweatshirt

Heavy sweater

Waterproof/wind resistant jacket

Wind blocking snow pants

Proper shoes are an absolute necessity!  Nothing will ruin your day as quickly as wet and/or frozen feet.  Pack a pair of water proof winter boots with a deep tread for traction.  Don’t forget your gloves, face mask and winter hat!
