When I was a kid, my family’s vacations were nearly always road trips. Although we would have an eventual destination ( Six Flags, National Parks etc) everything between our house and the destination was spur-of–the-moment. We would all jump in the family station wagon and take off! These days, while I still love a road trip, I enjoy having a bit more structure.
Thinking about a road trip? Consider one of our wonderful National Parks. If you can get off the interstate, do so. We have some great scenic highways that provide a much more relaxing and enjoyable trip. In fact, check out National Byways, the US Dept of Transportation site listing roads with archaeological, cultural, historical, scenic or recreational features. It is searchable by state! If you are headed to a National Park, you can check GuideAlong for GPS navigations of National Parks. You may also want to check recreation.gov which will let you know if you need to pre-book, as well as provide a list of popular locations, a map, and some great destination information.
If you are forced to travel on an interstate, take a look at iEXIT app which will help you find upcoming exits that have gas, restaurants and hotels.
