The Mardi Gras Service

Water tower and buildings in Gulfport, Mississippi

As of August 18th, Amtrak is reviving its old route between Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, via the gulf coast of Mississippi.  This four hour journey, christened the “Mardi Gras Service” stops in multiple towns on the way and provides a wonderful opportunity for an inexpensive Autumn vacation.  From beginning to end, the fare is just $15.00.  Let that sink in for a minute!

Pascagoula, the first stop after leaving Mobile, is a great place to hop off for a visit. An interesting and historical town, there are a multitude of shops so browse away!  The town also has beautiful beaches so be sure to wander down and take a look!

Biloxi, the next town over,  has the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, designed by architect Frank Gehry.  If you enjoy art, make a point of visiting this museum.  Looking for a little fun?  The Margaritaville Resort might be your go-to place!  This would be a great place to spend a couple of days before hopping back on the train!

Next up is Gulfport where you can wander along Fishbone Avenue-known for both its restaurants and music venues.  Ship Island Excursions offers a cruise to the uninhabited Ship Island as well as sunset cruises and dolphin watching.

Returning to the train, you will pass Bay St. Louis and finally roll into New Orleans. Stay a few days and enjoy!

  1. This sounds like it could be a good ride. I think I would like it better in the winter when it is not so hot.
