People that know me are aware of how much I love trains! Despite my love of rail travel, my experience has been limited to Amtrak and Rocky Mountaineer. Recently, I have been reading about other train lines and rail destinations. Here are two examples of my current infatuations – heck one day I just may have to try them out!
HIRAM BINGHAM, A BELMONT TRAIN, SOUTH AMERICA – Belmont is always about luxury travel and this particular trip fits squarely in that category! If you have ever wanted to see Machu Picchu, this route may well be for you. Leaving from Cusco, you’ll travel through the Sacred Valley and up to the entrance of Machu Picchu. It is a short ride, generally 3-4 hours but an unfailingly luxurious one. You’ll have lounging space galore, and plenty of open air views. You will dine on gourmet Peruvian food and there will be plenty of Pisco Sours! This is a leisurely round trip ride. Your Belmond accommodations at each end of the trek will be as wonderful as the ride itself!
THE CANADIAN by VIA RAIL – Via Rail is the Canadian National Train Service (similar to Amtrak) – If you like a long haul ride you will love their 4 day trip from Toronto to Vancouver. They offer 3 different service level:
-The Economy Level is well worth thinking about. Since the seats on this train are large, comfortable and recline, this is a good option for those who do not require a cabin.
-Their second service level is Sleeper Plus-you can choose a berth, or a cabin for 1, 2, or 3. It includes fresh cooked meals, wines and access to lounges and the scenic dome cars.
-Level 3 is Prestige Class, which includes a room 50% larger than the one provided by Sleeper Plus. In addition to an extra large window and private bath with shower, the perks include gourmet meals , reserved seating, interactive talks and wine tastings. They aim to spoil you and my understanding is that they do an excellent job!
Have you traveled either of these trains? If so, please drop me a note with you impressions! I will be periodically reviewing different rail trips and would love to hear your experiences on these or other rail carriers!
