Turks and Caicos are primarily known for pristine beaches, turquoise water and Caribbean luxury. South Caicos is a bit different. It is bordered on the north by the uninhibited East Caicos and is separated from the Turks island. This gives it a more isolated feel. It has less than 1200 permanent residents and you will frequently see donkeys and horses roaming the island.
Cockburn Harbor is the main settlement and the Bell Sound Nature Reserve is a notable landmark. It has the same exquisite beaches found throughout the country but with an important difference. It is quiet and if you are looking for a peaceful Caribbean interlude this may be just the place for you. It also has wonderful snorkeling, scuba diving (some great reefs around), sailing and of course those beautiful white sand beaches! Just as in the rest of the country, the US dollar can be used everywhere!
Peak season is December through April. If you are interested in this peaceful haven, come soon. Tourism is starting to pick up and while it will always be beautiful, the relative quiet will eventually become a thing of the past.
