Bruges, Belgium

Bruges2

My introduction to Bruges was the 2008 film  In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.  I loved the movie- it was a great dark comedy(my favorite type)  but I also fell in love with the look of the city itself.  I wanted to see it for myself and eventually I did just that!  Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage City and is arguably the best preserved medieval city in existence!

Bruges is another walkable European city located in northwest Belgium.  The city is compact and there is a lot to see -medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, interesting passageways and a multitude of canals.  In fact, you can take a boat trip down the canals, if you wish.  Look for the Burg Square which is lined with towers and structures of all types and ages.  In the Market Square (Markt) you will see the Belfry, easily the most prominent building  in the city.  If you climb to the top you will be rewarded with a bird’s eye aerial view!  Wander the streets yourself, or take one of the many tours offered.

Plan on spending several days here as it is both picturesque and historical.  A mere three hour train ride from Amsterdam, it is also a great day-trip.  There are even guides that will escort you on the train to Bruges and then provide a tour on arrival!

You can have a great time here in any season!  Summer is the busiest time of year. For smaller crowds consider the spring or fall.  We visited in autumn and found the weather perfect and the crowds manageable.!  Lest I forget, the food is also fabulous!
