People who know me are well aware of my feelings about flying. Despite having flown hundreds of times, it still scares me. Back in my road warrior days it was necessary – now I do it simply because I love traveling. The longer the flight, the worse I find it – stuffy, uncomfortable, and boring. Here are a few things that make it a bit more bearable.
- Comfortable clothes – A no-brainer for me but I am casual by nature. It may be a bit more difficult for those more attuned to fashion. Wear LOOSE clothes-not uncomfortably baggy but loose enough not to bind or restrict movement. If the weather is warm I usually will wear sandals on a flight, otherwise I will bring a pair of slippers. Compression socks are also a good idea and occasionally I will even wear them…;-)
- Gear – If you can read on a plane (I cannot) take a book. I like a small travel pillow and a comfortable throw is also a good idea.
- Hydration – The low humidity on planes makes me thirsty and gives me a headache. I take a BIG water bottle with me so I don’t have to bug the flight attendants constantly. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine can also be helpful. The lack of humidity will also dry out your skin so applying frequent moisturizer is a good idea.
- Sleep – If you can do it, you should. If you are comfortable and hydrated, sleep chances are significantly improved! Oh, and remember it will be over soon and you will be somewhere fabulous!
I know drinking on plans can dehydrate you but sometimes a drink will help with relaxing.
