Although it is possible to do a land-based tour, cruises tend to be the most popular way to see the islands. They offer a more structured itinerary with a better chance to visit more locations. Weather certainly needs to be taken into consideration since this is an outdoor destination. However, it is nearly always hot so there is a bit more subtlety involved in the choice. May is actually a good time due to the cloud cover that helps to neutralize the heat of the sun. The seas are also calm, making snorkeling and kayaking more enjoyable. From June to September the water is rougher and often cold, requiring a wetsuit.
If you can travel last minute you may be able to find a discount. Otherwise the best deals are generally September through November. December through March, winter time in the northern hemisphere) generally brings the most visitors. Really though, seeing the animals is what this location is all about and you can see them at any time of the year! As one of the best places on earth to observe animals in their natural habitat they will never disappoint.. They have no fear of humans and you will be able to see them up close -really close! Whales are the exception- June through November is best for whale watching.
Just do it! This destination is unlike any other. Do plan to spend a week (or more!)
