What Makes a Place Magical?

Have you ever visited a place that seemed magical to you?  What qualities made it seem that way?  Was it mysterious, secluded, spiritual or even spooky?  Was it unusual in certain ways that made it stand out to you? I have visited two magical places in my life-  Savannah, Georgia and Costa Rica.  Each is magical in its own unique way.

In a sense, Savannah is my mystical Charleston.  There is a spookiness about it and in fact it has a long ghostly history that attracts visitors eager to discover it for themselves.  It is not surprising that Savannah has a number of ghost tours.  At one time, Savannah was intricately involved in the slave trade and I find it easy to believe that the ghosts of the enslaved are still around-if only to watch.

Costa Rica is unlike any other place I have been.  It even looks magical with its  huge flowers and plants, lush rain forests and hanging bridges.  There are mountains, volcanoes and an endless array of plants and animals.  It looks like a tropical garden of Eden to me.  The people are wonderfully friendly and there is a strong connection to nature.  I have recently read a similar description of the El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico.  When I find myself in Puerto Rico, I will definitely pay it a visit.

I have not visited, but have read about the magical natures of both the New River Gorge in West Virginia and the Haleakala Crater in Hawai’i.  If you have visited either, drop me a note with your impressions!
