Biscayne National Park, Florida

biscaynebayMiamiinBackground

Located within sight of Miami and with a look reminiscent of the Caribbean, Biscayne National Park stands testament to a very specific type of environment.    With 95% of the park covered by water, it is all about the geography, folks!  Unsurprisingly, it is home to over 600 native fish as well as many species of sea turtles.  Manatees also make frequent appearances, as do crocodiles, so pay attention to your immediate environment – always.  There are also lots of plant species-seagrasses as well one of the longest stretches of mangroves on Florida’s east coast.

If you have the time, check into the offerings of the Biscayne National Park Institute.  Located in Homestead, Florida they offer a number of eco-adventures suitable for adults, children and families.  These include evening bay cruises, guided tours, snorkeling, kayaking and more. They last anywhere from several hours to an entire day.  One of the most popular is the Sail, Paddle, Snorkel and Island Visit Tour.  This full-day tour is geared specifically for active adults and kids over eight who are good swimmers.

Biscayne National Park is a great addition to a southern Florida vacation.  Add it on to your Keys itinerary – you’ll be glad you did!
