Snorkeling in Iceland?

snorkelingSilfraIceland

Over the last few years, Iceland has become quite a celebrated vacation destination for visitors of all types.   Though it is certainly unique, it never popped into my head that it offers world-renowned snorkeling.  It does, though!  Snorkelers and divers come from around the world to visit the Silfra fissure inside of Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The park is located on the “Golden Circle” about an hour from Reyjavik.  This is the only place in the world where one can dive or snorkel between 2 tectonic plates.  You’ll need a wetsuit for this winter dive into water so filtered and so pure that you are actually encouraged to drink it!   Tours abound to this site which is considered one of the best 5 dive spots in the world.!

You can stay overnight in Reykjavik or try the Greenhouse Hotel, located 30 minutes away, a sustainable hotel with mountain views.
