Is it possible to take a European vacation without spending your kids’ inheritance? Yes and rather painlessly at that! Here are a few suggestions that should help.
- MANAGE EXPECTATIONS- Rather than take a month and constantly worry about cost, take two weeks – relax without worrying.. This is one of the easiest ways to control cost and enjoy yourself.
- AVOID PEAK SEASON – This one can save you an incredible amount of money. Go in May or October and avoid sweltering in Rome or Athens with millions of your fellow travelers! Hotels (and possibly airfare) will be cheaper, sometimes significantly so. As an added bonus, the smaller crowds will make you feel far less harried.
- BOOK EARLY – The cost of hotels will increase over time. So go ahead and do it early. Delayed gratification CAN be a good thing!
- LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION – What do you want to see? Visit lesser known areas and don’t feel obligated to visit places you don’t really want to see. Think of eastern Europe, which is incredibly picturesque in addition to being cheaper than western Europe. Croatia, despite its growth in popularity, is still affordable. Lithuania is at the top of the list of inexpensive holidays. Go to Transylvania and look for Dracula’s castle. Better yet visit Brasov, a city in Transylvania, which is totally ringed by the Carpathian mountains. The city itself is full of medieval charm with cobble streets and friendly inhabitants.
